Many pregnancy resource clinics face a difficult if not impossible task in finding a medical director. Imagine their delight if a doctor were to initiate a call to their PRC and say, "I want to get involved. I'll even help you go medical!" Next month, five physicians will do just that in Maryland, Missouri, Colorado, West Texas and East Texas.
Their desire to become involved in this work was born out of their experiences at Choices Medical Clinic in Wichita, Kansas.
These physicians have been trained in family medicine under the auspices of Via Christi Health System, the second largest Family Medicine Residency program in the country. They then receive their pregnancy resource crisis intervention at Choices Medical Clinic.
Choices Medical Director, Scott Stringfield, MD is on the teaching faculty at the Via Christi Health System in Wichita, Kansas. Since the year 2000, Dr. Stringfield has arranged for the Family Practice Residents to have the option of choosing to do a community rotation at Choices Medical Clinic.
There they are trained to do 2-D and 4-D sonograms, counsel abortion-minded women and provide prenatal medical care. They also are given a unique perspective on life and learn that guiding a woman through an unplanned pregnancy involves a holistic approach dealing with her spiritual, physical and emotional levels.
This month is a landmark in that this graduating class is the first class to have spent all three years of their residency rotating through Choices Medical Clinic. Most participants have even come in on their days off to gain more experience.
The exiting news is that out of 14 graduating physicians setting up a medical practice in various communities next month, five (5) of them now desire to become involved with the pregnancy resource centers in the communities where they will live and work.
Choices Medical Clinic thus has become a training hub that sends out family physicians like the spokes on a wheel, to do pregnancy resource work throughout the country! What an exciting and precedent-setting development.
